CINDERELLA is a full length ballet in two acts to Prokofiev's world-famous score, choreographed by Cristiano Principato and produced by Sander Sellin (Grand Art MTÜ - Estonian Ballet Agency).

The two created an unprecedented type of show that wants to be a hybrid between a "full-length ballet" and a "ballet gala": unlike a gala, which showcases short extracts from different ballets, this show follows the storyline of the fairytale Cinderella, while still featuring dancers from various leading European ballet companies, just like a gala-show would.

During its first three running seasons, the production has involved dancers from Paris Opera Ballet, Hungarian National Ballet, Finnish National Ballet, Estonian National Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, Polish National Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Compañía Nacional de Danza, Tivoli Ballet Theatre, Balletto di Milano and Vanemuine Ballet.

Cinderella premiered in 2024 on the main stage of Estonian National Opera and since then it has been performed numerous times not only in Tallinn and several other Estonian cities, but also in Riga (at the National Opera House) and Vilnius (at Compensa Concert Hall).

For the 2026–27 theatre season, the shows will feature guest artists from Estonian National Ballet, Vanemuine Ballet, Finnish National Ballet, France Concert, Hungarian National Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Tivoli Ballet Theatre and two more companies to be announced soon.
Additionally, the dancers of Novarts Ballet Studio Company will also join the line-up of prestigious international companies involved in the project, which continues to be produced by
Estonian Ballet Agency and is set to become an annual collaboration.

It was precisely this model of gathering artists from different companies in the same show that inspired and led to the creation of Novarts Ballet.
One of the most frequently reimagined ballets in the classical repertoire, Cinderella has been adapted in countless versions over the past decades.
In this interpretation, the show has proven to be extremely family friendly, with its vibrant fairytale colours, cartoon-like visuals, classy costumes and its both romantic and comical plot.
With the idea of reimagining Petipa’s long lost version of Cinderella, Principato incorporated some typical balletic structures such as a Grand Pas de Deux (Cinderella and Prince), a Pas de Sept (the fairies pas d’action) and a Divertissement (danced by the lead characters at the ball).

In order to achieve this, few modifications had to be made to the order in which Prokofiev’s score is played during the show, although most of it is still kept in its original form.
Cinderella is a strong and witty character who knows how to get out of difficult situations, but thanks to her pure and kind heart, magic will come her way with loads of wonderful surprises.

 SYNOPSIS

ACT 1

CINDERELLA’S HOUSE

It is the day of the royal ball, a glamorous event to which all the eligible ladies of the kingdom have been invited, in the hope that the Prince might choose one of them as his bride.

In a luxurious manor, a humble girl of extraordinary beauty and kindness is lovingly decorating the shoes she hopes to wear for the occasion with glitter and sequins.

She can only devote herself to her sewing while the household sleeps, as during the day she is trapped in endless chores by her cruel stepmother.

Worn out by long hours of housekeeping, the beautiful girl often falls asleep beside the fireplace, a habit that over time led to her being known as Cinderella.

After breakfast, her vain and arrogant stepsister Anastasia rehearses the solo she will later perform at the party, while the younger Genevieve, more naïve and caring, accompanies her on the flute.

Soon enough, the family prepares for the evening celebration and sends Cinderella to the village to run a few last errands.

While she is away, her Fairy Godmother, who has watched over her since she became an orphan, visits the house in secret and helps with some of the many household tasks.

When Cinderella returns home with fruit and a large pumpkin, she rushes to make the final adjustments to her stepsister’s gown, but just as she is about to finally try on her own dress, Anastasia and the stepmother tear it to pieces and lock her invitation inside a sealed box.

After the family has left for the celebration, Cinderella bursts into tears over the remains of her dress, lovingly sewn from leftover fabrics through countless sleepless nights.

At that moment, the Fairy Godmother reveals herself and presents Cinderella with a magnificent gown and a glittering mask that will conceal her identity from all guests at the ball.

Assisted by the fairies of the four seasons and their two cavaliers, she transforms a large pumpkin into an enchanted coach.

With a bobby pin in her hand, Cinderella picks the lock of the sealed box to recover her invitation and finally gets to wear the glittery shoes she had been embellishing until that very morning.

Before sending her on her way, the Fairy Godmother warns Cinderella that the spell will last only until midnight and urges her to return home before then, otherwise the magic will vanish and she will be left in her humble rags before the entire kingdom.

THE PALACE

To the lively strains of a mazurka, the Prince and his counselor welcome the guests, until the sudden arrival of a mysterious and beautiful young woman interrupts the festivities and captivates everyone in the ballroom.

The Prince is immediately mesmerized by Cinderella’s grace, and as the two begin to waltz together, it is love at first sight for both.

ACT 2

THE PALACE

As the Prince seems to have left the ballroom, his counselor entertains the guests with an exciting galop.
Soon after, he starts dancing with Genevieve, Cinderella’s stepsister, and the two develop a sweet bond.

When Cinderella and the Prince return to the Grand Hall after a walk in the gardens, the stepmother does her best to outshine the other ladies and draw the Prince’s attention to her daughters.

After Anastasia falls to the ground while trying to charm the Prince with her solo, the stepmother engages in a sparkling dance with two gentlemen in order to divert attention from her daughter’s failed performance.

Then comes the moment of the Grand Pas de Deux, a clear sign that the Prince has chosen the mysterious masked girl as his future bride.

However, midnight strikes, and the Fairy Godmother appears to remind Cinderella that she must return home.
In her haste to leave, the mysterious girl loses one of her glittery shoes on the palace staircase.

THE VILLAGE

The next morning, the Prince and his counselor examine the glittery shoe and are determined to discover the identity of the mysterious girl.

With a little help from the Fairy Godmother’s magic, they go from door to door throughout the kingdom in search of the young woman whose foot perfectly matches the lost shoe.

CINDERELLA’S HOUSE

The stepmother wakes up to a messy kitchen and is surprised to find Cinderella in a dreamy and distracted mood, especially  after having forbidden her to attend the ball the previous night.

Suspicious, she notices that Cinderella’s invitation is missing from the sealed box and realizes that Cinderella has been hiding something in the broom closet.

While Cinderella is busy doing the laundry, the stepmother discovers the shoe identical to the one worn by the mysterious masked girl at the ball.

After uncovering the truth, furious and jealous, she confronts Cinderella, and, while passing by the window, spots the Prince and his counselor slowly approaching the house.

At once, she locks Cinderella inside the closet and welcomes the Prince and his counselor, hoping that either she or one of her two daughters will fit the shoe.

Luckily, once again, Cinderella picks the lock with her bobby pin, sets herself free, and leaves her old rags behind.
Anastasia and the evil stepmother must now learn to clean for themselves, while Genevieve and the counselor fall in love with one another.

Reunited with the Prince, Cinderella slips into her glittery shoes and takes the first steps into a new life — a life of happily ever after.

Good things happen to good people.
